Entrepreneur of the Week: Brian Taylor

Barb Wire movie
Millions off of popcorn seasonings before your 30? This is Brian Taylor’s story as the founder of Kernel Seasons, a company that now produces 16 flavors of all-natural popcorn flavorings including barbeque and apple cinnamon. Taylor, himself a die-hard popcorn fanatic, got bored with the standard butter flavor. He checked out the seasonings on his favorite potato chips and started tinkering with flavors in his dorm room at University of Michigan. The flavorings were so popular with other students that he saved up his money from working part-time jobs and hired flavor experts to help him fine tune his flavors.
Brian’s success didn’t happen overnight. He started bottling seasonings in his dorm in 1999, graduated in 2000 and then used his $7000 in savings to hire those experts. In the meantime, to save money, he moved in with his parents and continued to work on his business. That year, he added his first movie theater to his customer list. Now his seasonings are in 70% of movie theaters and you can buy your flavors, and popcorn paraphenalia, online or at Walmart
and Target.
Kernel Seasons now employees 41 people and occupies a 31,000 square foot facility with gross revenue estimated to be over $10 million. Taylor still oversees all operations and is always in the process of drumming up new seasoning flavors and other directions for the company to head in.
