Entrepreneur of the Week: Amy Butler
Move over Martha! Amy Butler
is the new design, product line phenom! At her core, Amy is a textile designer, with flickr groups devoted to her designs, quilters in love with her, and fans all over the world. Amy started off by personally marketing her small bags to stores that she loved in Kansas City where she lived at the time. Her husband, David, is himself a designer and in the early ’90’s they moved back to Granville Ohio to be near family and Amy says “we…started our little Art of the Midwest studio with two cats and about $1200.” Times weren’t easy at first. She says that she and David took a lot of odd jobs to meet expenses including picking apples and doing painted surface designs. They survived on one vehicle. Amy started doing textile design for a friend and was a contributing editor to Country Living magazine, finally returning to the memory of those first small bags for which she started selling sewing patterns. Her first big success was when she showed her fabric designs at the International Quilt Market. From that point, business started taking off.
Amy Butler Designs now includes paper products (stationary, craft kits, gift wrap, paper plates and napkins), pillows and quilts, dinnerware and several sewing and design books.
